Becoming a vegetarian.

I’ve been a vegetarian in the past, and I’m going to give it another go.  Starting on Monday, (after Thanksgiving holiday is over and my parents have gone back home to Minnesota) Luke and I are going to switch to a vegetarian lifestyle.  We’re also going to try hard to buy local organically grown foods from Farmer’s Markets.

Why?

Well, the first thing is that a recent documentary on KPBS about food and the process it goes through the farm to the dinner plate has enlightened us about a few things.  The first is that we are so fortunate to be from San Diego, where access to organic, sustainable, and local food is so great.  It also showed a terrible video of a farm bulldozing a sick cow over, and it made me feel sick to my stomach.

The other reason is because I eat really poorly.  I don’t really spend a lot of time considering what I’m eating, I just consume it.  I eat fatty foods, and a lot of it.  I think that taking the time to really evaluate my food choices for the dietary content would be a great thing for me to start doing.

This is going to be hard for me.  I’m not what I’d consider a very adventurous eater.  I don’t actually like soy or tofu, so it will be a learning process to pick good substitutions for the foods I like.  I don’t generally eat much red meat anyway, but switching to no meat whatsoever will be difficult for me.

Hopefully it goes well.  If anyone has any tips, let me know!
